14k Yellow Gold 3 Row Italian Panther Chain Necklace, 18"
Posted Tuesday, January 23, 2007 12:54:08 PM by Blog57 Team
The Panther is a sophisticated symphony of perfectly tuned gold. Tubes of polished Italian gold, round on one side and flattened on the other, are hand-woven into a movie star turned princess bold and elegant necklace. The uniform pattern of the 3 rows adds an element of restraint to this eye-shattering sleekness. This necklace promises a short speech when it accepts it academy award. It is 18 inches long and made of 14K gold: pure gold is too soft and malleable for jewelry so it is mixed with alloys of silver, copper and zinc to add strength and durability. The clasp is a box lock clasp that is very secure....

Sithengi attendees will get to see a revised version of the same presentation VLab made at Amsterdam's IBC earlier this year to rave reviews. VLab's Lustre colourist, Brett Manson and facility manager, Tracey Williams, will speak frankly about the various factors that played a role in their decision to digitally grade Tsotsi with Lustre; and will have a partial screening of excerpts for illustrative purposes. "We'll also touch on how to plan for a DI, problems faced in the production process and how the grading process can be used to overcome problems," says Tracey, "And address how the DOP/Director and Colourist work as a team to achieve looks and consistency in an interactive grading session." Obsessed with the battle / At 15, Eastwood was riveted by the photo of Marines raising the U.S. flag

In order to co-produce and direct the epic war movie "Flags of Our Fathers," which opens Friday, Clint Eastwood first had to be nominated for an Academy Award. The actor-filmmaker had contacted DreamWorks when he learned that the company had bought the movie rights to James Bradley's 2000 best-seller about the Marines who raised the U.S. flag during the battle of Iwo Jima. "It was a book I couldn't put down," recalls Eastwood, "and I knew from the first page it was something I wanted to make." But "I never heard a single word back, so I went about my business." "Business" was directing "Mystic River," the 2003 crime drama for which Eastwood was nominated for an Oscar. Although he didn't win (his stars Sean Penn and Tim Robbins did), Eastwood came out a victor that night because backstage he bumped into DreamWorks' Steven Spielberg, who invited him to direct "Flags of Our Fathers." "We'll produce together," he told Eastwood, "but it'll be your baby....

Life achievement honour for Andrews

Julie Andrews, whose film career has ranged from magical nanny in an Academy Award-winning performance in Mary Poppins to regal queen in The Princess Diaries, will receive a life achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild. The honour will be presented at the guild's annual film honours on January 28, the union announced. "Julie Andrews is a woman of great generosity, creativity, courage, elegance and wit. She embodies and transcends the memorable roles she has created," said Alan Rosenberg, the guild's president. "Julie seems genuinely touched and thrilled to be receiving an award from her fellow actors. I have assured her the honour is ours," he said. Andrews, 70, won the best actress Oscar with her feature film debut in 1964's Mary Poppins. She also earned Oscar nominations for the lead role in 1965's The Sound of Music and 1982's Victor/Victoria....

Ten animated festival favorites have been made available for purchase in Apples iTunes Music Store (www.itunes.com). Released by Shorts International, the programming and distribution arm of short films specialist Brit Shorts, the selection includes John Canemakers Academy Award-winning The Moon and the Son: An Imagined Conversation, as well as fellow Oscar nominees The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello from Anthony Lucas and Badgered from Sharon Colman, as well as Bill Plymptons 2005 Annie Award winner, The Fan and the Flower. In The Moon And The Son: An Imagined Conversation, John Turturro voices the role of a son struggling to iron out his turbulent relationship with his Italian immigrant Father, voiced by Eli Wallach. The 30-minute autobiographical piece was nominated for an Annie Award but ended up losing to Plymptons The Fan and The Flower, an unconventional love story that features the voice of Paul Giamatti....

A Collection of 2005 Academy Award Nominated Short Films
Posted Tuesday, August 08, 2006 9:11:20 PM by Blog57 Team
All but the last two entries are included in A Collection of 2005 Academy Award Nominated Short Films from Magnolia Films; more than likely, the exclusions of "9" and "One Man Band" were due to rights issues. Either way, we're still given an entertaining mix of shorts here---including both winners, of course---which clocks in at nearly three hours total. There's a nice blend of light-hearted fare (including "Badgered" and "Cashback", the latter of which is being made into a full-length film) and darker, more dramatic efforts (including the live-action winner "Six Shooter" [above left] and "Jasper Morello" [above right]), though most of these one and two-reelers freely travel between genres. The visually interesting but otherwise meandering "The Moon and the Son" (oddly enough, a winner in the animated category [at top]) represented only a handful of duller spots in this otherwise consistent collection....

Win Tsotsi on DVD
Posted Tuesday, July 18, 2006 1:04:19 AM by Blog57 Team
Tsotsi, the all-South African effort that won this year's Academy Award for best foreign language film, comes to DVD on July 17, and we have three copies to give away. Directed by Gavin Hood, the Momentum Pictures release is based on an acclaimed book by Athol Fugard, the author and playwright. The story centres on an angry young tsotsi (South African slang for street thug or gang member) who appears lost to a loveless life of casual violence. But a fateful carjacking offers him the chance of redemption. The events play out against the backdrop of a visceral, cross-cultural Johannesburg, a city of 10 million people, and backed by a streetwise soundtrack by Kwaito2 and Vusi Mahlasela. The DVD of Tsotsi is available to rent and buy from July 17, RRP 19.99, and comes with extras such as The Shopkeeper, a short film by director Gavin Hood, a reel of deleted scenes and alternate endings, as well as a 'Making of' featurette....
