Movie Review: The Princess Bride
Posted Saturday, January 13, 2007 1:07:21 PM by Blog57 Team
When it comes to defining delightful, amusing, and epic motion-pictures, there is no higher rung on the ladder than The Princess Bride. This terrific feature will warm your heart and tickle your funny bone simultaneously for hours on end. It’s a winsome fairy-tale about romance, adventure, and camaraderie. Moreover, it is yet another shining star of a comedy (alongside perhaps the funniest film on celluloid, This is Spinal Tap) from director Rob Reiner. With a cough and an image of the Bases Loaded Nintendo video game, "the grandson" (Fred Savage) makes his entrance. In need of both getting well and a bedtime story, his grandpa (Peter Falk), begins to read him the tale of The Princess Bride, by S. Morgan Stern. Grandpa informs grandson that this tale includes "fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, and miracles." What more could anyone ask for?And so, the story of Westley (Cary Elwes) and his love, Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright), begins. While serving the young Princess as a boy, Westley professes his love by exclaiming "As you wish," instead of "I love you." He knows he is only a peasant, but he yearns for her Excellency so. Surprisingly, true love triumphs, as Buttercup confesses a mutual attraction. However, when it appears that Westley has perished at sea, Buttercup is forced to become the bride-to-be of the Great Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon). Meanwhile, a poor band of lost circus performers, Vizzini (Wallace Shawn), Fezzik (Andre the Giant), Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) encounter Westley, and assist him on his quest to break up the wedding and win back the girl. Additionally, the man named Inigo relentlessly searches for the six-fingered fellow (Christopher Guest) who killed his father....

Jennifer Lopez worked her Blackberry backstage at the Kodak Theatre on Thursday night while hubby Marc Anthony huddled with Tony Bennett, George Clooney, Paul Newman, Billy Crystal, Bruce Willis, Kelly Clarkson and Madeleine Peyroux. The group playfully posed for photos before the audience arrived for Bennett's 80th birthday celebration and tribute concert. "It's the least we could do for him," deadpanned Newman during an evening that also raised funds for his Hole in the Wall Camps for children with chronic illnesses. "After all, he's an American treasure and he's young enough to be my kid brother." Quincy Jones bear hugged Willis and Clooney when he arrived backstage. "Come stai?" Jones said to Clooney as they began chatting about Clooney's villa on Lake Como. Then Crystal took the stage to set the evening's comical tone with jokes about aging and octogenarians....

O'Brien steers funny telecast of well-orchestrated Emmys

Finally. An Emmy Awards telecast as good as the TV it sought to honor. Tightly planned and smartly performed, this year's telecast with host Conan O'Brien was a welcome about-face from last year's sloppy post-Katrina affair. Put another way, when the worst thing to criticize was the inane banter of the presenters -- which was unusually lame -- you know the crew and the TV academy can be proud. O'Brien was at his best when it mattered most, at the outset of the telecast. He flawlessly adapted Billy Crystal's successful approach to film parodies, putting himself in Lost, The Office, 24, House, Dateline NBC and even South Park. He followed that with a monologue that touched on practically all the controversies surrounding this year's Emmy selection and still left room for zingers aimed at Hollywood's top two targets, Mel Gibson and Tom Cruise....

JOHANNESON CLAIMS TITLE
Posted Saturday, July 15, 2006 3:08:54 PM by Blog57 Team
Carl Johanneson has claimed the British super-featherweight title with a fourth-round stoppage victory over Billy Corcoran at York Hall, Bethnal Green. The nephew of former Leeds United winger Albert Johanneson stopped the London-based Irishman after 63 seconds of the fourth round to win the vacant title at the east London venue. Corcoran - and his big following of fans - protested about the stoppage after he was sent reeling by the 27-year-old former soldier after just over 10 minutes of non-stop action. But referee Ian John-Lewis' intervention looked timely with Corcoran taking a lot of punishment and suffering a gash over his right eye. Johanneson said: "I'm surprised he went toe to toe with me but that's what I like. I just took my time....
