NEW YORK (AP) -- Angelina Jolie adopted from Cambodia and Ethiopia. Madonna, as most of the planet knows, is adopting from Malawi. And ordinary Americans adopt foreign-born children by the thousands each year -- a rate that has tripled in the last decade. But with close to 120,000 children waiting in the U.S. foster care system, what's driving the push in overseas adoptions? It's an emotional issue that goes to the heart of what people are seeking when they adopt a child -- and the obstacles they can face in this country. "I'm happy to see any child adopted anywhere in the world," says Gloria Hochman of the National Adoption Center, based in Philadelphia. "But every time I see a story about a celebrity adopting, I always think, 'Why don't they look here?' It makes me wonder: Do they know there are children waiting here?" (Watch what challenges Madonna faces in adopting a child from Malawi -- 1:50 ) Americans now adopt some 23,000 children overseas every year, according to immigration statistics....

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's new Huntsville pediatric cancer care clinic has landed its first celebrity endorsement. Randy Owen, lead singer of the band Alabama, appeared at a Wednesday morning news conference to praise officials from St. Jude and Huntsville Hospital for teaming up on the clinic. When the clinic opens in January, area children will no longer have to travel to Memphis, Birmingham or Nashville to receive top-notch treatment for leukemia, AIDS, sickle cell anemia and other diseases. "This is a dream come true," said Owen, who helped found the Country Cares for St. Jude Kids radiothon. "God bless whoever made this decision - you're absolutely wise. "I'll never be able to explain to you how this makes me feel." Owen has a soft spot for sick children: His daughter Randa was born with severe pneumonia and spent a week in Huntsville Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit in 1988....

The conditioning drills werent going quite as Merrillville coach Zac Wells had planned. A couple of guys were lagging behind, a few were bent over at the waist, desperately trying to get some air into their bodies and a couple of others looked as if they were about to empty the contents of theirs. Looking for players to serve as models, Wells called out names for the Pirates to look up to, whose example they should follow. He pointed out Eric Williams, the starting running back and Division I recruit. He pointed out Darren Handley, an electrifying runner and the previous weeks star of the game. And he pointed out Ken Polezoes, a guy nobody outside of the programs ever heard of. I was like, 'Awwww, man, Polezoes says with a laugh. Theyre all watching me. Now I really gotta run hard....

Lori Rollins gets the celebrity treatment even though she's never been in a movie, she isn't married to someone famous, and she's never held political office. Lori gets the stares, the pointing and the random people approaching her with questions because she happens to be the mother of 14-month-old twins, Ashley and Conner. This "celebrity treatment" is one of the first things Lori warns new moms of twins about at the Santa Clara County Mother of Twins Club. "Whenever I go out with Conner and Ashley, I get million questions," said Lori, a Gilroy resident. "People ask if they're Siamese twins, if they're identical, all kinds of things. Sometimes I want a sign on their stroller that says, 'Yes, they're fraternal twins named Conner and Ashley.' I've gotten to the point where I try to avoid making eye contact with people....
