Danny De Vito

Deck the halls

In the holiday comedy "Deck the Halls," Danny De Vito plays a guy named Danny determined to put so many lights on his house that it can be seen from outer space. Not surprisingly, some neighbors object, including Matthew Broderick's button-down, uptight leader of the local winter festival. "He's a real Currier & Ives kind of guy, while my character is somebody who's going deep into debt at Home Depot," De Vito says. The actor has played abrasive types before. He rose to fame as Louie DePalma — considered by many as one of the most obnoxious characters in television history — on "Taxi" in the late '70s, picking up an Emmy and three other nominations. He subsequently played similar oily types in such comedies as "Ruthless People" and "Other People's Money." "(Danny) has bought every available light in the whole county," the actor says about his character....

How to write a blockbuster novel

Bored with the day job and fancy penning a blockbuster novel? Here's how to access your inner Dan Brown. Steer clear of self-help guides such as this one: Type "How to write a bestselling novel" into Google and you will be confronted with 3,220,000 Web pages, all bursting at the seems with tips on how to realize your literary aspirations. Ignore it, all of it. Failure to do so will pitch you into a glutinous mire of well-meaning but contradictory advice. The simple truth is that if you have determination, self-discipline and a basic -- like kindergarten level -- command of whatever language you happen to be writing in, you have all the necessary tools to hand to pen a bestseller. Everything else is just hot air. Laze around in your underwear: A crucial, and often underrated part of the novel writing process is the "allowing ideas to slowly germinate" phase, also known as lying around in your underpants eating biscuits and watching useless daytime TV....

My Top Twenty Pound-for-Pound. Bring it On!

17.09.06 - By Ted Sares: It's time to start stir up things on ESB so here my first top twenty pound-for-pound best fighter list. But what makes this list different is that I have actually witnessed each boxer fight at one time or another, and I don't mean by video. Of course, I carefully analyzed their records, ko percentages, skill-sets, the era in which they fought, entire body of work, quality of opposition and other important criteria as well. 1) Sugar Ray Robinson. 175 (109 ko's) - 19 - 6- 2. In a career that spanned three decades, Sugar Ray embodied the essence of the sweet science. He was a world welterweight champion and held the middleweight title five times. Incredibly, he was so great for so long that he won his first Fighter of the Year award in 1942 and his second award in 1951....

Not enough sweet in tart 'Ohio'

"THE OH IN OHIO" ? * 1/2 ? Parker Posey, Paul Rudd, Danny De Vito; not rated, probable R (vulgarity, profanity, sex, drugs, brief nudity). "The Oh in Ohio" clearly aims to be the female-centric version of last year's comedy hit "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." It even features one member of that film's supporting cast, scene-stealing Paul Rudd. But while "Oh" is every bit as crude and sexually obsessed as "Virgin," it lacks the necessary sweetness to counterbalance its tartness. "Virgin" redeemed itself by redeeming its characters at the end. That lesson seems to have been lost on this at-times painfully unfunny comedy. ....

Montgomerie's finishing touch still missing

Colin Montgomerie's now familiar penchant for poor finishes forced him to settle for a 70 in yesterday's first round of the KLM Open on the Kennemer links. It left the 43-year-old Scot five behind Denmark's Anders Hansen and the Frenchman Christian Cevaer, who defied heavy rain and a high wind for record-breaking 65s, one clear England's Robert Rock and the Austrian Markus Brier. Montgomerie, warming up after a fortnight's family holiday for a final tilt of 2006 at a majors' breakthrough in next week's USPGA Championship, is keen to find his cutting edge for the visit to Medinah in Illinois, but admitted: "I have to play well elsewhere to counteract the last hole which I always seem to bogey. It's very frustrating. Today I played nicely all the way round, very nicely actually, switching back to the belly putter, which worked well enough....

Scarlet Johansson Not Dating Her Brother
Posted Monday, August 07, 2006 11:06:01 PM by Blog57 Team
Screen siren SCARLET JOHANSSON is sick of people mistaking her twin brother for her boyfriend, because it's "disgusting". Her twin brother HUNTER is only three minutes younger than her but the pair look so different - Hunter is 6 foot 3 inches tall and Scarlett is 5 foot 4 - when they are seen together, people assume they are lovers. Johansson says, "It's a bit like ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER and DANNY DE VITO in TWINS. We don't even look related, but if we're out together, people think we're dating. It's disgusting!" 13/07/2006 12:36 ....
