Councilman Tim McCoy announced Monday that the borough swimming pool, opened late last year after repair work, will open on Memorial Day. Manager George Zboyovsky said there would be more repairs at the landmark pool, involving replacing piping, adjusting valves and caulking minor leaks. He expected it to be finished by the end of March. The cost is $15,000. Council said it would invite two developers to make public presentations on the pool. Council President Linda Kitchen told an audience of more than 30 people that rumors that the borough planned to sell the swimming pool and park to developers were false and said it could not happen because the parcels are public property. Council said it was considering resurfacing parts of Hillsdale, Pinehurst, Annex and Wisconsin avenues this spring....

Caps showing commitment to the cause

They've lost one of the finest players in the world in Lauren Jackson, an experienced tall and world champion in Jenny Whittle, a quality veteran in Eleanor Sharp and an international point guard in Angela Marino, but has it seen the reigning premier fall from grace? The answer at this stage is quite simply no. Three rounds into the WNBL season, the Canberra Capitals are the only team boasting a perfect record. The Caps opened the season with a mauling of an under-manned Dandenong (77-46) in a grand final re-match while in week two, it was the team's cross-town rivals at the Institute who got a touch-up 81-67. Round three was the side's first double-header which they started in emphatic fashion with a 90-60 demolition of Perth, before backing up on Sunday to hold off Bulleen 64-62....

Kudos & kindness

I once had the honor of an 8 year-old ski student, Jonny Mosely, who went on to win the Olympic Gold Medal in freestyle skiing. At that time, I said it takes a community to build a champion. Today, after directing the Tahoe/Reno International Film Festival here at South Shore, I can say it takes an individual commitment to move in collaboration with others to create a community. And, it was this community of individual collaborators that made the festival a huge success. On behalf of the Tahoe/Reno International Film Festival, I wish to personally thank the following organizations, people and businesses that contributed their time and resources to help create a new and exciting event for our community: Lake Tahoe Community College, South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce and the Tahoe Daily Tribune - particularly Rick Chandler of Lake Tahoe Action, whose passion for film and prior contacts with some of the film makers made his stories personal and connected us in a more intimate way with our own home grown filmmakers....

Parlez-vous franais?

The Angst that greeted this year's GCSE results, showing a slump in the number of students taking modern languages, was exaggerated. Those exam results told us much about Britain's arrogantly monoglot youths but nothing about their more diligent parents. For while young people are turning their backs on foreign languages, adult Britons, regretful of not having paid attention even when languages were compulsory to the age of 16, have been gripped by a desire to improve the country's dismal record. A survey by the UK's National Centre for Languages indicates that more than 200,000 adults enrolled in language classes last year. More than half the local-authority providers of these courses reported that those in Spanish, French and Italian were oversubscribed. ....

Lundstrom springs into 2007 with bamboo
Posted Tuesday, August 15, 2006 9:05:44 PM by Blog57 Team
TORONTO -- Bamboo fashions? That's right. They're part of Canadian fashion icon Linda Lundstrom's Spring 2007 Collection, which was unveiled in Toronto on Thursday. "I had been looking for a fabric made from bamboo for about four years," Lundstrom explained during an interview in the parking lot of her Toronto factory, which was transformed into a tented fashion show runway to showcase her latest creations. "It has a lot of fabulous qualities," she said enthusiastically. "Bamboo fabrics stay two degrees cooler than other fabrics, so they provide cool comfort," Lundstrom said. "And they have a natural wicking ability. They wick moisture away from the skin." The soft, breathable, knit fabrics also offer an antibacterial function, acting as a natural deodorant, she said....

Prince Albert to attend Newport Festival to mark mother's film

Fifty years ago, Grace Kelly appeared on screen alongside Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby in "High Society," an aptly titled musical comedy set against the scenic backdrop of Newport and its storied mansions. It would be Kelly's last movie role before she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco and became known to the world as Princess Grace. This weekend, the late actress' son, Prince Albert II of Monaco, will visit Rhode Island for the opening night concert of the Newport Jazz Festival as part of a 50th anniversary celebration of the film. The Friday night concert, a tribute to Sinatra, will be performed by guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli, who opened concerts in the early 1990s for Ol' Blue Eyes himself. "There's an extra, added excitement to the whole thing," Pizzarelli said in a telephone interview from his country home in New York State....

The fall crush of Idol albums
Posted Thursday, July 20, 2006 11:06:23 AM by Blog57 Team
In response to the questions about whose album was coming out first, I asked the RCA publicist who handles most of the Idols if there were any album release dates set in stone yet. He said no, only that albums by Taylor, Katharine, Chris and Kellie are all expected to come out before the end of the year. And, he said, no decision has been made as to which might come out first, although I do think that will be Taylor unless the recording process takes too long. Idol release dates have been shuffled around in the past at the last minute, so it's still premature to speculate. Sorry I don't have a definitive answer for you, but wanted to put it out there. ....
