| Standing out as Kevin Bacon s stand-in | | Posted Monday, October 30, 2006 7:13:20 PM by Blog57 Team | | Jeff Koenig never pictured himself as one degree of separation from actor Kevin Bacon. But lately the Columbia native has found himself traveling the same paths as the Hollywood star. The 25-year-old Koenig landed what he calls the dream job of a fledgling actor when he was tapped as Bacon's stand-in for the 20th Century Fox movie "Death Sentence." The movie features Bacon as an executive seeking revenge after witnessing the death of his son. It has been filming in Columbia since mid-September and will continue production through next month. And for Koenig, whose previous movie experience came as an extra in three other films, every day on the set has meant a new reality check. "It's just unbelievable," said the Ben Lippen High School and University of South Carolina business school graduate.... | |

The Aviators ran their record to 7-0 - 4-0 in the GMC - with a crucial 27-24 overtime victory over Lakota West Friday night at Sycamore's Bud Acus Alumni Field. Sycamore missed a potentially game-winning 39-yard field goal at the end of regulation. Then, after Lakota West had kicked a field goal on its overtime possession, Sycamore senior Mike Latessa scored a one-yard game-winning touchdown on second down to keep the Aviators perfect. Latessa also returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, after Lakota West had taken a seven-point lead. Sycamore senior quarterback Mitch Allen completed 8-of-16 passes for 48 yards and two touchdowns, and added another 95 rushing yards on 16 rushes.... | |

| | | Documentary puts Daniel Johnston's twisted genius on display | | Posted Monday, September 18, 2006 1:19:38 PM by Blog57 Team | | Daniel Johnston, the certifiably crazy subject of the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" (Sony Classics, 4 stars), has written and recorded hundreds of songs and produced hundreds more paintings and drawings. His prodigious output rivals that of compulsively prolific author-songwriter-TV personality Steve Allen. Sure, we all remember Allen as the "father" of late-night talk-show TV. Name one song he wrote. How about the title of one of his 50-plus books? I didn't think so. In another decade, Johnston will be a footnote. Maybe a trivia question on MTV. (Who was the raspy-voiced kid who stole the scene uninvited at a live MTV concert in Austin and then rode to celebrity on the strength of a T-shirt boasting one of his hand-drawn album covers and worn by Kurt Cobain?) At present, however, Johnston is undeniably fascinating.... | |

| | | Politics aside | | Posted Tuesday, July 25, 2006 7:04:50 AM by Blog57 Team | | When 250 people flocked to the Lenox Hotel for a fund-raiser last month, Hilary Gabrieli had the perfect opportunity to step up and tell the crowd why her husband, Christopher F. Gabrieli, should be elected governor. But she left the introductions to others. ``The reality is, she wasn't the kind of spouse that was going to stand up and say, `Gee, I really need to be a center of attention,' " recalled Democratic lawyer Cheryl Cronin , who cochaired the Women for Gabrieli event with Hilary Gabrieli. Gabrieli has kept a lower public profile than any other spouse in the governor's race. She has appeared by her husband's side at only a handful of campaign events, instead deciding to maintain her focus on raising the couple's five children, ages 5 to 12. Her life revolves around their Louisburg Square mansion on Beacon Hill and their summer retreat in Beverly Farms.... | |
