80s Action
Posted Wednesday, January 25, 2006 5:46:27 PM by Penny Peterson
Action movies from the 80's are mostly homoerotic. It is an essential part of the movie's aesthetic. Sure, Steve Reeves took his shirt off in The Thief of Baghdad, but he spent most of his time chasing after the princess, not touching other men. Of course all of the heroes in 80s Action films talk like tough guys, but there is rarely any hetero-sex and by the end of the movie they are typically locked in mortal, lascivious combat with another muscular, shirtless man. The men in this films can really beat you up, not like the action stars of today.

In Sight/Movies: Sci-fi action film depressingly real

After the July 7, 2005, bombings in London of three underground trains and one bus, Prime Minister Tony Blair granted the police new discretionary powers to prevent terrorism. The British were already one of the most observed citizenries in the world. According to the Surveillance Studies Network, there are 4.2 million closed-circuit TV cameras installed throughout Britain. The Britain depicted in Alfonso Cuaron's adaptation of P.D. James' science fiction novel, "Children of Men," can be seen as a logical extension of present-day Britain. The movie speculates that by 2027, terrorism and an escalating conflict between the Muslim world and the West will be rampant across the globe. Because Britain is considered relatively safe, refugees swarm to its shores, and the streets of London are lined with temporary holding cages for suspected illegal immigrants....

Life at 24 Frames Per Second

I love movies. I'm one of those people who sits in the theater long after the action ends, reading every line of the credits. I even know what gaffers, best boys, and key grips do. Movies mark and shape many of the turning points and epiphanies in my life. Being a child of the eighties, the first movie I ever saw in the theater was The Return of the Jedi. Other movies followed, although not all of them on the big screen. I remember the first movie I saw in which the good guy didn't win: Gandhi, starring Ben Kingsley. I stayed up every Easter to watch Charlton Heston part the Red Sea as Moses in Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments. I remember that my parents wouldn't let me watch Tom Cruise and Rebecca deMornay in Risky Business and staying up past my parents' bedtime and sneaking downstairs to view my first comedy: a late-night, uncut version of Airplane....

Fists fly as Jet Li says goodbye

Jet Li wanted to make an epic for his swan song from martial-arts movies. "Jet Li's Fearless" doesn't reach those heights - heights scaled by such as "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." But it makes a valiant stab that scores quite strongly. Li wastes no time. In the first half hour, he rips off - and rips up opponents - four sequences in which he fights with some lethal weapons and one that has neither blade nor barb but slings dangerously. His character is a real hero of China - a man who embraced martial arts after his father was killed fighting. His Huo rises to the top, savoring the sweetness of victory at the fancy restaurant owned by the man (Dong Yung) who used to do his homework while he trained. But the cocky champ loses his mother and daughter to revenge and tries suicide....

Study Offers Proof That Smoking in Movies Influences Children

(AgapePress) - Hollywood moguls often claim that the behaviors portrayed in their movies -- such as illicit sex, profanity, or alcohol and drug abuse -- don't influence the viewer in any way. But a new study suggests those moguls may be mistaken. According to a study by the American Legacy Foundation and Dartmouth Medical School, "From 1999 through 2005, 76% of U.S. live-action movies rated PG-13 and 40% rated G or PG featured tobacco imagery. Over that time the balance of on-screen tobacco incidents has shifted from R-rated into youth-related films." The American Legacy Foundation says on its website that it is "dedicated to building a world where young people reject tobacco." That is why the group finds the new study so disturbing, because it says research "confirms the link between exposure to movie smoking and smoking among U.S....

Student makes movies to teach Bible

When it comes time to write the traditional "What I Did on My Summer Vacation" essay, the kids from First United Methodist Church in Hanover will have a unique experience to recount. For a summer's worth of Sundays, they were movie stars. David Hall, a cinema and digital arts major at Point Park University in Pittsburgh and a member of First Church, played a key role in this special summer Sunday school program. His experience behind the camera helped a group of 20 first- through sixth-graders complete seven short movies based on popular Bible stories. "It was exciting to see the kids get so involved," David said. "They loved seeing themselves on screen and reading their names in the credits." Getting to that final screening wasn't easy, though. Working within the time constraints of a Sunday school program presented some interesting challenges for David....

It all rides on the opening weekend

NEW YORK (AP) -- Movies often take years to travel from idea to completion. Careers are risked. Millions are invested. Armies of professionals are mobilized. Thanks to immediate box office reporting from theaters, within mere hours of release it's possible to answer the burning question: Is it a bomb or a blockbuster? "The opening weekend is torture," says Peter Bart, editor-in-chief of Variety and a former studio producer. "So much is in your hands -- maybe ten years of work. All you can do is watch. It is beyond stress-inducing." Bart recalls packing into cars with fellow Paramount execs in 1972 to eagerly scope out the opening-day lines for "The Godfather" (one of the first movies to open wide -- that is, to be released across the country at the same time)....

Growing up in Millport, Ala., Tray Robinson remembers the much-anticipated trips he made as a child with his mother to watch movies on the big screen in the Columbus theaters.Robinson was like any teenager, working part-time jobs in retail and in restaurants until the love for the theater he had as a child returned to him, and he sought a position with the Varsity and then the Malco Theater, in Columbus two years ago. Now, at 23, Robinson is a projector operator at Malco, seeing movies from a new perspective, behind the scenes as he entertains hundreds of people every night.Though his true passion is culinary arts, Robinson has become a self-proclaimed film critic, learning the formulas used in making Oscar-worthy productions. He originally enjoyed the perks of seeing movies for free, but now has a deeper understanding of the process and the hard work required to humor, scare and mystify customers of all ages. How long have you been with Malco? ....

Batas Militar delivers pure, honest-to-goodness Pinoy action
Posted Thursday, July 13, 2006 7:07:08 PM by Blog57 Team
Are Filipinos still interested in old-fashioned action movies that have no computer-generated visual effects, no bullets firing in slow motion and no morphing antagonists? The answer will be known Wednesday when Batas Militar starts showing in Metro Manila theaters. The film stars the brothers Mark and Meynard Lapid, sons of Senator and action star Lito Lapid, as well as Mark Anthony Fernandez and Tanya Garcia. The film is a Lapid clan venture, produced under the company name MTL Productions. Mark and Meynard are the oldest and youngest children of the senator by his legal wife, Marissa. The senator has one son, Manuel, by former Miss International Melanie Marquez. Mark, now in his mid-20s, is the incumbent governor of Pampanga, where his father was once the vice-governor....
