Why it's cool: "Dive into the sonic soup" is the tagline for the Exploratorium's new exhibit, "Listen: Making Sense of Sound." The new 5,000-square-foot exhibit features 55 interactive exhibits that teach families to listen, well, differently. Try on alternative ears to hear like a deer. Check out a jukebox with a rather unusual repertoire, swap movie soundtracks to give cinematic scenes a decidedly different fillip, or try a Listening Walk -- a blindfolded excursion through a rich sonic environment. What kids like: The blindfolded walks are unmistakably cool, but we also like the sound -- pardon the pun -- of the "Reverse Ears." Strange tubular gizmos let your right ear hear things spoken into your left. And who can resist the "Eavesdropping" exhibit that lets you listen in on three conversations via a hair salon hairdryer? What parents like: Once again the award-winning Exploratorium makes science irresistible, and that's a come-on for any parent....

Seasoned vocalist Jan Short and long-time bassist Jay Grauer, two of the three members of the Jan Short Trio, practice the Beatles In My Life in the living room of their Kings Beach home. They are one week from taking center stage for an acoustic performance at the famed Carnegie Hall in New York. The unique thing about us - were doing it with no amplification, said Grauer. The Jan Short Trio prefers the straight acoustics of Carnegie Halls smaller 500-seat room - Weill Recital Hall- a favorite of renowned cellist Yo Yo Ma, where they will perform Oct. 14. The trio will play a variety of music, from jazz to pop to standard tunes, including works by George Shearing, Willie Nelson and Jan Short herself. Though Grauer is symphonically trained, the band wont play any classical music for this weekends performance....

Tonight's line-up of fresh faces at 11th Annual Bermuda Music Festival might disorientate a few people. While compared to Thursday night's slate of classic greats like Gladys Knight and the Original Manhattans, some of the acts tonight are younger but mix youthful vigour with an old and soulful sound. Charlotte, North Caroline-native Anthony Hamilton has been described as a master in the tradition of classic black music. "All I know is that when people hear me, they're hearing an old 'familiar' voice, something that sounds reminiscent of something, someone they heard back in the day," Hamilton says of his own sound. "And all of them, the thugs, the young mothers, the old folks, the big sistas, they all encourage me, they tell me, 'keep sayin' it.'" Hamilton's career has been rocketing since 2003, when he was introduced to hit-maker Jermaine Dupri who signed him to So So Def imprint....
